MOORHEAD, Miss. — Mississippi Delta Community College Practical Nursing Instructor Dr. Bettinica Gatewood Cobbs has earned a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Nursing.
Cobbs completed the two-year doctoral program May 22. Her studies concentrated on nursing education and leadership in classroom and clinical settings.
Her doctoral project examined the accuracy of patient intake-and-output documentation in an acute-care unit. The work considered documentation by nurses and certified nursing assistants and evaluated practices intended to improve the reliability of patient records.
Accurate intake-and-output documentation helps healthcare professionals monitor hydration, kidney function and other aspects of a patient’s condition.
Cobbs also studied evidence-based practice, professional communication and leadership strategies that can be incorporated into MDCC’s Practical Nursing curriculum.
MDCC Assistant Director of Nursing and Practical Nursing Chair Veronica Caradine said the advanced degree adds new knowledge and experience to the program’s faculty.
Cobbs plans to apply what she learned to the preparation of future nurses and the continued improvement of nursing education.
