CLARKSDALE, Miss. — One of Clarksdale’s longstanding cultural events is preparing to return next week with three days of programs celebrating the Mississippi Delta connections of playwright Tennessee Williams.
The 34th annual Mississippi Delta Tennessee Williams Festival will be held Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 15-17, with events in Clarksdale.
Organizers have now published the festival’s 2026 schedule, and the programs are free and open to the public. Delta Williams Festival
The annual festival grew from an effort to explore Williams’ childhood years in Clarksdale and the ways the Mississippi Delta influenced his writing.
Although Williams became internationally known through works including A Streetcar Named Desire, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and The Glass Menagerie, his connection to Clarksdale began much earlier.
Williams spent part of his childhood in the Mississippi Delta, where his grandfather served as an Episcopal minister. People, places and experiences associated with the region later appeared in different forms throughout his writing.
The Clarksdale festival has spent more than three decades examining those connections through scholarship, theater, tours, discussions and other programming.
The festival was founded in 1992 by Coahoma Community College, under then-president Dr. Vivian Presley, with assistance from a $10,000 National Endowment for the Arts grant. Clarksdale journalist and photographer Panny Mayfield also played an early role in establishing the festival. Delta Williams Festival
Organizers worked with scholars connected to the study of Southern literature and Williams’ work as the festival developed.
More than three decades later, the event continues to combine literary scholarship with the Delta locations that influenced the playwright.
That setting distinguishes the Clarksdale festival from programs that examine Williams solely through his finished plays. Visitors can experience the community and region connected to his formative years while learning how those experiences surfaced in his work.
The 34th annual festival begins Thursday, Oct. 15, and continues through Saturday, Oct. 17.
Admission to festival programming is free.
