TUNICA, Miss. — Along Highway 61 in Tunica, the Blue & White Restaurant continues a food-service tradition that began more than a century ago.
The restaurant traces its establishment to 1924, when it operated as a café and service station near the railroad in downtown Tunica. It was later relocated to Highway 61 as part of a Pure Oil service station.
During its earlier years, the operation included a restaurant, gasoline service, tobacco and newsstand sales and a Greyhound bus stop. The gasoline pumps are gone, but the restaurant remains in operation at the Highway 61 location.
Blue & White serves breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week. Its menu includes eggs, biscuits, grits, pancakes and country ham as well as fried chicken, catfish, burgers, barbecue, vegetables, pies and other Southern dishes. The restaurant says its salad dressings, sausage gravy and several other menu components are prepared in-house.
The business’s history also reflects the importance of U.S. 61 to Delta commerce and travel. Before interstate highways redirected traffic, restaurants and service stations along the route served residents, agricultural workers, musicians and travelers moving through the region.
Today, Blue & White remains both a working restaurant and a reminder of the roadside businesses that helped shape the Mississippi Delta.
