Clarksdale, Mississippi – The streets of Clarksdale were filled with celebration, fellowship and hometown pride as the Clarksdale Day Fall Festival, presented by the Crossroads Youth Leadership Foundation, brought residents, former residents and visitors together for a week of events across the city.

Organized by Dave Houston, the festival was created with a simple but meaningful goal: to call Clarksdale natives back home and give them a reason to reconnect with the community that raised them.

The weeklong celebration featured activities throughout the city, creating opportunities for people of all ages to gather, enjoy entertainment and experience the culture that makes Clarksdale unique.

Houston said the response exceeded expectations, with hotels throughout Clarksdale and the surrounding area experiencing a surge in visitors. According to Houston, hotels in the city, along with the Isle of Capri Casino, were sold out during the festival weekend.

“I’ve never seen that many people in Clarksdale in my life,” Houston said.

For Houston, however, the festival was about more than attracting tourists. It was about creating an experience that Clarksdale residents, particularly longtime natives and older residents, could enjoy comfortably.

“The goal we had was to have a festival that called in the people in Clarksdale back home to the place that raised them,” Houston said. “And the festival did just that.”

He emphasized the importance of providing safe, affordable activities that could be enjoyed by the entire community.

“We have plenty of other festivals that bring in tourists into the city,” Houston said. “But this was something the elderly natives are able to come to the festival with their lawn chairs, able to sit down and be comfortable. So there was something for everybody.”

Houston credited the festival’s success to the residents who attended, as well as the vendors, sponsors and community partners who helped make the celebration possible.

Special recognition was given to the team at Higher Purpose Co. and Ben Lewis of Meraki Roasting Company for their support and contributions.

Houston said his work with Higher Purpose Co. helped inspire his vision for how culture, art and community pride can be used to revitalize neighborhoods.

He recalled visiting a community in Alabama similar to Clarksdale, where residents responded to development challenges by using art and murals to draw attention to the neighborhood and encourage people to stop and engage with the community.

“It awakened something in me,” Houston said. “We can bring people back here through the culture, the art, and put our city back on the map.”

The success of the Clarksdale Day Fall Festival also reflects the potential of large-scale community events to generate economic activity throughout the city. The influx of visitors benefited local hotels, restaurants, vendors and other businesses.

Houston said the festival is only the beginning. Additional major events are already being planned, including a Christmas extravaganza designed to provide toys to every child in Clarksdale.

Houston and the Crossroads Youth Leadership Foundation are encouraging residents, businesses and organizations interested in supporting future events to get involved.

Those interested in partnering, sponsoring or participating in upcoming events can contact Dave Houston through Facebook for more information.

As Clarksdale continues to build on its reputation as a cultural destination, organizers hope events such as the Clarksdale Day Fall Festival will do more than bring visitors to the city. They hope these celebrations will continue bringing Clarksdale natives back home.
